Fairlight Instruments Colour Synthesiser Model 108

The Fairlight 108 is a completely analogue six-level colouriser. It accepts a composite (or luminance) video input and assigns a different colour to each of six shades of grey in the picture. The turnover points between different levels of luminance can be adjusted and a group of red-green-blue controls is provided for each of the six levels. The output is RGB so an encoder is necessary to convert the image to composite video.

The 108 gives a very hard edge look similar to the "spectrum colouriser" preset on the Fairlight CVI.

The 108 can also be used as a six level luma keyer. Six key signals are available from a multipin connector on the back. These can be fed into a large video switcher (with multiple keyers) to generate an image with up to six layers of external video (instead of colours). The electronics are housed in a 1 rack unit box and the contols are on a 2 rack unit contol panel. Sync and blanking inputs are provided for genlocking but the unit can be switched, via internal jumpers, to operate on internal sync.
